The Story

Published September 1, 2018

There was so much that I did not know or understand, a part of our history was not known to me. Being in Jamaica we learn about our native history, colonization, our national heroes, and the native indians. It wasn’t until we migrated to the United States that I realized and understood the extent of slavery, racism, our displacement, segregation, the destruction and attempted destruction of African people. Now in a country which thrives on this discourse. Being here I saw so much, and experienced the hate that is shown, understanding the structure of this society, the role of distortion history played, the hypocrisy of equality. Seeing all this but not yet having the grasp on what to say or how to acknowledge what has been done to make better. To really tell our stories; for we cannot continue with the ones written by the oppressors filled with lies. “What I Want You To Know” really explores and shares another perspective of understanding, of enlightenment, of facing the truth, of facing the lies, of dispelling the lies, of saying what needs to be said.
